Despite the ongoing systemic problems plaguing our nation, our politicians and the media are caught up in horserace politics and not discussing the issues that matter to the well-being of our nation. Pope Francis's words should convict us: "How can it be that it is not a news item when an elderly homeless person dies of exposure, but it is news when the stock market loses two points?"
This project is an attempt to change the national narrative from the folly of horserace politics to the substantive issues that should be talked about every day by our politicians in Washington. In particular, we will:
- Run a national advertisement featuring the words of Pope Francis that urges the American public to wake up to the many social evils that are plaguing our nation's "culture of indifference."
- Educate lay Catholics in the pews about the great teaching of our faith's social justice tradition and how it relates to contemporary political issues.
- Advance Catholic speakers and voices in 75 major media markets throughout the United States.
